- Alaska’s Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes is like a steaming, alien landscape! When the volcano blew its top in 1912, it left behind a huge area covered in ash, and hot gases escaped from cracks in the ground, looking like thousands of tiny smoke clouds. Even though most of the “smokes” are gone now, it’s still a really cool and strange place, like walking on the moon, with hot ground and a story of a mighty volcano.

- While it used to have lots of “smokes,” most of them have cooled down over time.
