  • One of the most destructive forces on Earth, tsunamis are powerful waves triggered by sudden movement of land below the sea, such as an earthquake or volcanic eruption. The cities and communities along a coastline are often flooded or destroyed by such waves.

Fun Facts

  • The word “tsunami” means “harbour wave” in Japanese.
  • Tsunami waves can travel at over 500 miles per hour in deep water.
  • A ship at sea might not even notice a tsunami wave as it will only rise a small amount, as the waves get larger as they move closer to the shore.
  • Water often recedes or disappears from the coast just before the main tsunami wave arrives.
