Learning Point

  • The nation of Egypt was the earliest empire mentioned in the Bible. It was a powerful and dominant empire in the north of Africa and into the Middle East.
  • It held the nation of Israel captive for many years, before Jehovah released the Israelites using the ten plagues.
  • Afterwards, different kinds, or pharaohs, continued to try and influence the nation of Israel, before eventually Assyria put an end to their dominance.

Fun Facts

  • During the reign of Akhenaton mention is made to cities in Canaan from before Israel entered the land. This is in harmony with the details in the book of Joshua.
  • Later, Merneptah mentions that Israel was laid waste, and while an idle claim, it points to Israel already being in the land of Canaan, setting the date to after 1473 BCE.
  • Another pharaoh, Shishak, was one who took from Jerusalem during the reign of Rehoboam.
  • Finally, pharaoh Necho was intercepted by Josiah on his way to fight Babylon at the battle of Carchemish.
