Learning Point

  • Tarbosaurus is a theropod dinosaur very similar in design to Tyrannosaurus, but slightly smaller. It may not have had the same binocular vision that Tyrannosaurus had, but it is currently the second biggest Tyrannosaur we know about.

Fun Facts

  • The name Tarbosaurus means “alarming lizard“.
  • It was once thought some Tarbosaurus fossils were Tyrannosaurus, and other fossils were given unique names, but now paleontologists have moved all these to one species.
  • Some paleontologists still refer to Tarbosaurus as a different species of Tyrannosaurus.
  • Some fossils of Tarbosaurus have been stolen and smuggled to other countries, though one attempt to do so in 2012 stopped and the bones returned to Mongolia.
