- The game of tennis was originally called lawn tennis and comes from the older game we now call real tennis (sometimes called royal tennis). It was developed by by Harry Gem and Augurio Perera in Edgbaston, Birmingham, England between 1859 and 1865.

- The word “tennis” comes from the Anglo-Norman word tenez which means “hold!“, “receive!” or “take!“, and was used to tell the opponent the he was about to serve.
- “racket” comes from the Arabic word rakhat meaning the palm of the hand.
- “deuce” comes from the French a deux du jeu meaning the player is two points away from the game.
- No one really knows why the scoring is 15, 30, 40, though many ideas have been suggested.
