- Although football games have existed for a long time, Soccer, or Association Football, is one of the oldest established football sports that is still in existence. The early rules are very different to the modern game, and there were competing ideas on what rules should be used in football early on in the development of the game.

- ‘Soccer‘ comes from the ‘Assoc‘, and abbreviation of ‘Association Football‘, with the ‘a’ being dropped and ‘-er’ added to the end (as was the custom at the time in England).
- The first football club in the world is Sheffield F.C., formed in October 1857. It originally played under the ‘Sheffield Rules‘, before eventually joining the Football Association and following their rules.
- The game Rugby was developed around the same time as Soccer, but the teams who played it wanted to be able to pick up the ball, leading to a split between the teams. Rugby became its own form of game not long after.
- The oldest International football game was held between Scotland and England in 1872. The score ended 0-0.
