Learning Point

  • The Aurelian Walls were built to protect Rome as the city continued to grow bigger. There already existed the Servian Wall, but Rome had grown so big that the majority of the city was outside of them. Emperor Aurelian built the new wall to encompass more of the city, though there were still sections outside of the new walls.

Fun Facts

  • The wall came to have 383 towers, 18 main gates, 5 postern gates, 116 latrines (toilets) and 2,066 windows.
  • The walls were not built by Roman legions, but by the normal people, something that had not happened before.
  • It is built from concrete, but the outside facing sections are covered in bricks.
  • They were 11 ft thick and 26 ft high and there was a tower built every 97 ft.
