Piopiotahi or Milford Sound has been described by some as the 8th wonder of the world, and is home to a vast amount of marine life. It has the highest rainfall rate in New Zealand, and is a popular tourist destination.
It was called Milford Sound after the discover, John Grono, named it after his home in Wales, Milford Haven.
The local Maori name, Piopiotahi, is named after a bird called the piopio, and “tahi” which means “one”.
Piopiotahi is a fjord, that was not discovered by other explorers because of the narrow entrance from the ocean.
Stirling Falls is 495 ft high, and one of the popular places to see, with boat rides taking tourists right up to the falls.
