Learning Point
- Ospreys are large, unique birds of prey found globally, instantly recognizable by its dark eye stripe and six-foot wingspan. It is a highly specialized hunter that plunges feet-first into the water to catch fish, using powerful talons equipped with barbed pads. Ospreys build huge nests and are often viewed as a key indicator of a clean aquatic environment.

Fun Facts
- The Osprey is a very picky eater—almost 99% of its diet is fish! They rarely eat anything else.
- Their powerful claws, called talons, have tiny spikes underneath. These barbed pads act like sandpaper to help them grip slippery fish better.
- They hunt by flying high, hovering, and then diving headfirst, hitting the water with their feet first (not their head) to grab the fish!
- After they catch a fish, they twist it in their talons so the fish’s head is pointing forward, making it more aerodynamic (easier to fly through the air).
