Learning Point

  • Meadows are open fields or habitats, which along with the animal life that inhabit then, form a beautiful landscape. Flowers grow among the grasses, and provide a home to a large amount of animals, allowing for pollination, nesting, food and sheltering. They are sometimes natural, and sometimes manmade.

Fun Facts

  • Meadows can help with climate change as they can absorb large amounts of carbon which contributes to pollution.
  • In agriculture (farming), meadows are often use to describe fields that are allowed to grow for animals to eat (pastures), or for growing hay to be collected for in the winter.
  • In some places, fields left to grow wild will create temporary (transitional) meadows until the woodlands reclaim then. Native Americans helped to create vast meadows be regularly removing trees.
  • Permanent (perpetual) meadows occur where naturally trees don’t disrupt the growth of plants and grasses, perhaps because of soil or temperatures.
