Key Information
Fly Geyser
| Type | Geothermal Geyser and Travertine Terraces |
| Height (Mound) | Up to 30 ft |
| Temperature | More than 200 °F |
| Formed | 1916 |
Learning Point
- Fly Geyser is a geothermal geyser that formed in 1916 after human drilling open up the connection to the heated water below the surface. Over time the quartz and other minerals formed a series of cones from which the geysers spout their water. Scientists have studied this to understand more about how other geysers develop.
Project
- Draw a picture of Fly Geyser.
- Overview

Location
| Located in | Fly Ranch, Washoe County, Nevada, United States |
Fun Facts
- Scientists calculate that it takes quartz 10,000 or more years to normally develop, but at Fly Geyser it has developed far quicker.
- Drilling new holes changed where the water would burst from the ground.
- The original geyser was formed after they drilled to create a water source for agricultural work.
- All the cones and the travertine terraces formed from this accidental geyser.
