Learning Point
- The Euphrates River is the longest river in Western Asia, starting in Türkiye and flowing through Syria and Iraq. It’s famous because the fertile land between it and the Tigris River, called Mesopotamia, is known as the “cradle of civilization,” where ancient groups like the Babylonians built the first major cities and developed early writing, all depending on the river for irrigation. Even today, the Euphrates remains crucial for water and power, but dams and environmental issues are causing its flow to decrease significantly.

Fun Facts
- The Euphrates is the longest river in all of Western Asia!
- One of the most famous and powerful ancient cities, Babylon, was built right on the banks of the Euphrates.
- The river gets most of its water not just from rain, but from melting snow high up in the mountains of Türkiye. Because of this, the river’s water level is usually highest in the spring when the snow is melting quickly.
- The river is home to some unique animals, including a rare kind of reptile called the Euphrates softshell turtle, which has a flat, leathery shell instead of a hard one!
