Learning Point
- Elephant birds were enormous, flightless birds that once roamed the island of Madagascar. They were some of the largest birds to ever exist, standing taller than a human and weighing hundreds of pounds! These giants couldn’t fly, but they didn’t need to. They were likely herbivores, eating plants and fruits. Unfortunately, elephant birds are now extinct, likely due to hunting by humans and habitat loss.
