Learning Point
- The dodo was a large, flightless bird endemic to the island of Mauritius. Its unique appearance, including plump body, small wings, and a large beak, worked well because of the absence of predators. Unfortunately, the arrival of humans and invasive species led to the dodo’s rapid demise, as they were easily hunted and their habitat destroyed. Despite its short existence, the dodo has captured the public imagination and serves as a poignant reminder of the impact humans can have on the natural world.

Fun Facts
- Dodos lived on a peaceful island with no enemies, so they didn’t need to fly and were not afraid of anything.
- These big birds were actually related to pigeons, but they looked nothing like them!
- Sadly, dodos were super friendly and trusting, which made them easy targets for hungry sailors.
- Even though they’re extinct, scientists are still learning new things about dodos thanks to DNA from old bones.
