Key Information

Animal Architecture

Type Structures built by Animals
Examples Nests, Burrows, Termite Mounds, Dams, Traps, Webs

Learning Point

  • Just like humans build houses, some animals are amazing architects too! They create incredible structures for all sorts of reasons: to stay safe, to raise their families, or even to attract a mate. From the intricate nests of birds woven with twigs and leaves, to the underground tunnels of ants and the towering termite mounds that dot the landscape, animal architecture comes in all shapes and sizes. These animal homes are not only beautiful but also perfectly suited to their needs, showing us just how clever and resourceful creatures can be, and teaches us about the one who designed them.

Fun Facts

  • Birds build all sorts of nests, from tiny hummingbird nests to large eagle nests, using twigs, leaves, mud, and even spiderwebs!
  • Ants create complex underground tunnel systems with many different chambers for living, storing food, and raising their young.
  • Termites build huge mounds that can be taller than a human, with special chambers for temperature control and ventilation.
  • Beavers are amazing engineers! They build dams out of logs and mud to create ponds where they can build their lodges.
