Learning Point

  • Caracals are super cool wild cats known for their distinctive long, black, tufted ears that look like antennae. Found across Africa and parts of the Middle East and Asia, these medium-sized felines are incredibly athletic, with powerful hind legs that allow them to jump up to 10 feet in the air to snatch birds right out of the sky! They’re also known as “desert lynx” because of their similar appearance to lynxes, but they’re not actually related. Caracals are speedy hunters who mostly work alone, stalking prey like rodents, birds, and even small antelopes.

Project

  • Draw a caracal leaping into the air.

Fun Facts

  • The name “caracal” comes from a Turkish word that means “black ear,” which makes perfect sense when you see their awesome, long, tufted ears!
  • They can leap over 10 feet into the air to catch birds right out of the sky.
  • Caracals don’t need to drink a lot of water because they get most of the water they need from the animals they eat.
  • In some places long ago, people actually trained caracals to hunt birds for sport.
  • Their ears have about 20 different muscles, which helps them twist and turn their ears in every direction to listen for prey hiding nearby.
  • Caracals are so fast that they can run up to 50 miles per hour, which is about as fast as a car on a highway!
