Learning Point
- Banana plants are the world’s largest herbs, not true trees, with a “fake” trunk made of wrapped leaves. Each plant is a perennial, meaning it produces only one large bunch of fruit before the main stem dies, immediately replacing itself with a new shoot that grows from the underground base to start the cycle all over again.
Project
- Draw a picture of a banana tree and some bananas or plantains.

Fun Facts
- Even though they are taller than most people (some grow over 20 feet!), the banana plant is not a tree! It is actually the world’s largest type of herb (like a massive piece of grass).
- Banana and plantains are the fourth most produced food globally surpassed only by the staple crops of rice, wheat and maize.
- The tall part that looks like a woody trunk is fake! It’s called a “pseudostem” and is just layers of huge, tightly wrapped leaf stems all mashed together.
- Bananas grow in huge hanging clusters called a bunch. The smaller rows that you find in the supermarket are called a hand, and each single banana is known as a finger!
- Scientists call the banana fruit a berry! Berries are fruits that grow from a single flower and have tiny seeds inside. If you look closely at the middle of your banana, you can see the little black dots that are the seeds.
