- Hoover Dam was built as a project to provide water and prevent flooding of the Colorado River. It was an immense project, costing millions of dollars during the Great Depression. Many worked on the project, and a lot of people died during construction. It was completed in 1935, and handed to the US government in 1936.

- It cost $49 million at the time, about $763 million in today’s money.
- Over 100 people lost their lives, with possibly deaths not being reported correctly.
- 3,250,000 cubic yards of concrete were used in the dam, and a further 1,110,000 cubic yards of concrete were used in the other buildings around it.
- Lake Mead is the name of the lake formed by the dam, and the abandoned town of St. Thomas was flooded once construction was complete.
