It sits in a <strong>picturesque <\/strong>location in the <strong>north of Wales<\/strong>, and was <strong>built by Edward I <\/strong>as part of his effort to <strong>control and hold<\/strong> on to the <strong>territory in Wales<\/strong> he had <strong>conquered<\/strong>. It includes a <strong>town wall<\/strong>, designed to help <strong>protect the town<\/strong> along with the castle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading class=\"class-box\">\r\n\t<ul>\n<li>The castle was <strong>built<\/strong> on the site of a <strong>Welsh monastery<\/strong>, probably to help put in the minds of the local Welsh people that <strong>the English had control<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>withstood several sieges<\/strong>, and was <strong>held by men loyal to Charles I<\/strong> during the <strong>English Civil War<\/strong> in <strong>1642<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It was <strong>abandoned during the 17th century<\/strong>, becoming a location many <strong>tourists <\/strong>and <strong>painters <\/strong>would come to admire.<\/li>\n<li>It has the <strong>oldest stone machicolations<\/strong> in Britain, which are designed to allow the defenders to <strong>throw things on to
