First a <strong>lighthouse was built<\/strong>, and then later the main <strong>fort<\/strong>, the largest in the area, was built in stages. It was used as a <strong>fort<\/strong>, a <strong>prison<\/strong>, and a <strong>quarantine station<\/strong>. class=\"class-box\">\r\n\t<ul>\n<li>It covers an <strong>area of 16 acres<\/strong> and was made with <strong>over 16 million bricks<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It was <strong>named <\/strong>after the third US <strong>President<\/strong>, <strong>Thomas Jefferson<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>They used <strong>rainwater<\/strong> to provide <strong>safe drinking water<\/strong>, though some early attempts to filter it didn&#8217;t work very well.<\/li>\n<li>At the height of its use as a <strong>prison <\/strong>in November <strong>1864<\/strong>, <strong>882 prisoners<\/strong> were in the fort, guarded by <strong>583 soldiers<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\r\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-f56f613f
