As a living example of how <strong>island formation happens<\/strong>, it has been of great interest to many <strong>scientists<\/strong>, who have been able to study how volcanic islands <strong>develop<\/strong>, as well as how they are <strong>colonised by plant and animal life<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading class=\"class-box\">\r\n\t<ul>\n<li>On <strong>14 November 1963<\/strong>, the cook of&nbsp;<strong><em>\u00cdsleifur II<\/em><\/strong>, a trawler sailing these same waters, spotted a <strong>rising column of dark smoke<\/strong> southwest of the boat, which was discovered to be a <strong>new island<\/strong> forming.<\/li>\n<li>The new island was named after the <strong>fire j\u00f6tunn Surtur <\/strong>from <strong>Norse mythology<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Within a year<\/strong> of the eruptions, they island had developed enough to <strong>remain above the level of the sea<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Other smaller islands<\/strong> have developed nearby and then been <strong>washed
