It once had a&nbsp;<strong>vast population<\/strong>, but&nbsp;<strong>hunting<\/strong>&nbsp;over the&nbsp;<strong>time humans have been on earth<\/strong>&nbsp;drove it to Facts<\/h4>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"class-box\">\r\n\t<ul>\n<li>The&nbsp;<strong>last pair<\/strong>&nbsp;of Great Auks, found incubating an egg, were killed on the&nbsp;<strong>island of Eldey<\/strong>&nbsp;on&nbsp;<strong>3 June 1844<\/strong>, on request from a&nbsp;<strong>merchant who wanted specimens<\/strong>, with J\u00f3n Brandsson and Sigur\u00f0ur \u00cdsleifsson&nbsp;<strong>strangling the adults<\/strong>&nbsp;and Ketill Ketilsson&nbsp;<strong>smashing the egg<\/strong>&nbsp;with his boot.<\/li>\n<li>The name &#8220;<strong>penguin<\/strong>&#8221; was possibly from the&nbsp;<strong>Welsh<\/strong>&nbsp;words&nbsp;<strong><em>pen gwyn<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;meaning &#8220;<strong>white head<\/strong>&#8220;, and was later used to&nbsp;<strong>name the flightless birds<\/strong>&nbsp;found in south that&nbsp;<strong>resembled<\/strong>&nbsp;the Great Auk.<\/li>\n<li>The great auk was generally an&nbsp;<strong>excellent swimmer<\/strong>, using its&nbsp;<strong>wings to propel<\/strong>&nbsp;itself underwater.
