Known in antiquity as a <strong>natural highway for trade<\/strong>, it was also the dramatic stage for <strong>famous Biblical clashes<\/strong>, including <strong>David facing Goliath<\/strong> in the <strong>Valley of Elah<\/strong>. Beyond its surface beauty, the region\u2019s unique <strong>soft chalk geology<\/strong> allowed <strong>ancient people<\/strong> to carve out <strong>elaborate underground caves<\/strong>, <strong>hiding places<\/strong>, and <strong>fortresses<\/strong>. Long ago, traders, travelers, and armies all had to use these valleys as highways to cross the country.<\/li>\n<li data-list=\"bullet\">The ground is made of a soft, chalky rock called <em>kirton<\/em> with a hard crust on top. This made it super easy for ancient people to carve out massive, bell-shaped underground rooms using hand tools!<\/li>\n<li data-list=\"bullet\">Centuries after biblical times, people fighting for freedom during the Bar Kokhba revolt connected these underground caves together to build secret, winding tunnel networks to hide from Roman soldiers.<\/li>\n<li data-list=\"bullet\">In ancient times, kings treated the Shephelah like a defensive shield.
