The <strong>mantle<\/strong>, a thick layer of <strong>semi-solid rock<\/strong>, moves in <strong>slow convection currents<\/strong> that <strong>shift tectonic plates<\/strong>. Deeper still is the <strong>outer core<\/strong>, a <strong>sea of liquid iron<\/strong> and <strong>nickel <\/strong>that generates our <strong>planet\u2019s magnetic field<\/strong>. At the very center sits the <strong>inner core<\/strong>, a <strong>solid metal ball as hot as the Sun\u2019s surface<\/strong>, kept <strong>solid <\/strong>by crushing <strong>gravity<\/strong>. We live on the outside &#8220;skin&#8221; called the <strong>crust<\/strong>, which is actually the thinnest layer of all.<\/li>\n<li>The very middle of the Earth (the inner core) is a solid metal ball that is about as hot as the surface of the <strong>Sun<\/strong>!<\/li>\n<li>The ground beneath your feet isn&#8217;t perfectly still. The crust is broken into giant puzzle pieces called <strong>tectonic plates<\/strong> that float on a hot, gooey layer of rock called the mantle.<\/li>\n<li>The Earth&#8217;s outer core is made of liquid iron that flows around like a river. This movement creates a giant <strong>magnetic field<\/strong> that acts like an invisible shield, protecting us from space radiation.<\/li>\n<li>All the sparkly diamonds in jewelry were actually made deep inside the Earth&#8217;s mantle, where the heat and pressure are so strong they squeeze carbon into crystals.<\/li>\n<li>Humans have never even come close to the center!
