As one of the <strong>earliest known stegosaurs<\/strong>, it was <strong>smaller and more primitive<\/strong> than its famous cousin, <strong><em>Stegosaurus<\/em><\/strong>. It featured a <strong>double row of leaf-shaped plates<\/strong> along its back and lethal &#8220;<strong>thagomizer<\/strong>&#8221; <strong>spikes <\/strong>on its tail for defense. Uniquely, its <strong>skull was broader<\/strong> and still held <strong>teeth in the front<\/strong> of its mouth\u2014a feature <strong>later stegosaurs did not have<\/strong>. It lived about 165 million years ago, which is <strong>20 million years before<\/strong> its more famous cousin was even born!<\/li>\n<li>Unlike later stegosaurs that only had beaks, Huayangosaurus still had <strong>teeth in the front of its mouth<\/strong>. This makes it look a bit more like a &#8220;toothy&#8221; lizard compared to the toothless-fronted dinosaurs that came later.<\/li>\n<li>This dinosaur didn&#8217;t just have plates on its back; it had big, scary <strong>spikes sticking out from its shoulders<\/strong>.
