It&#8217;s famous because the <strong>fertile land between it and the Tigris River<\/strong>, called <strong>Mesopotamia<\/strong>, is known as the <strong>&#8220;cradle of civilization,&#8221;<\/strong> where ancient groups like the <strong>Babylonians <\/strong>built the <strong>first major cities<\/strong> and <strong>developed early writing<\/strong>, all depending on the river for <strong>irrigation<\/strong>.
