Fun Facts

  • The name “Mammoth” may have come from several different places, one of which could be a version of “mehemot”, the Arabic version of the biblical word “behemoth”.
  • The largest known male woolly mammoth tusk is 14 ft long and weighs 201 lb. About a quarter of the tusk was inside the socket in the skull.
  • newborn woolly mammoth calf would have weighed about 200 lb.
  • The last know Woolly Mammoths are thought to have lived on Wrangal Island and might have been there as recent as around 2000 BCE.
