- She was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic in 1928, and in 1932 was the first to do so as a solo pilot.
- In 1929 she helped found an organization of female pilots that later became known as the Ninety-Nines.
- In 1935 she made history with the first solo flight from Hawaii to California, 2,408 miles long, a longer distance than that from the United States to Europe.
- Her disappearance has led to many ideas about how and where she disappeared, but no evidence has been found of her plane or her and her copilot, Fred Noonan.
