Learning Point
- The dinosaur Titanosaurus gives its name to the entire group of giant, long-necked sauropods called Titanosauria. This herbivore lived about 70 million years ago in what is now India, when it was a separate island continent. Although the original fossils are considered too incomplete by many scientists to be a distinct species, its relatives were among the largest land animals ever and fed on a varied diet of conifers, palms, and even early grasses.

Fun Facts
- The name Titanosaurus means “titanic lizard,” because it was named after the powerful and massive Titans of Greek mythology.
- The family of dinosaurs named after it, the Titanosaurs, includes some species like Patagotitan and Argentinosaurus that are the largest land animals to ever walk on Earth!
- The original Titanosaurus fossils were found in India, which, 70 million years ago, was a massive island separated from the other continents!
- These gentle giants were herbivores (plant-eaters) who ate massive amounts of food—up to 2,000 pounds (one ton) of plants every single day!
- To get so huge without breaking their legs, many Titanosaurs had bones that were filled with lots of tiny air pockets—like a natural Styrofoam—which helped make them lighter!
