Pencils
| The Factory | Faber-Castell Factory, Stein |
Learning Point
- Producing millions of pencils per year, pencil factories have been producing pencils that we use today for over 200 years, though pencils were first invented more than 400 years ago. They use graphite mixed with clay to create the pencil line, and vary in thickness and colour.
Project
- Design your own fun pencil.
Fun Facts
- We call the writing part of the pencil ‘lead‘, but lead was never used, it has always been graphite.
- Clay is mixed with graphite in varying amounts to create different shades.
- 600,000 pencils are made each day in the Faber-Castell factory.
- They can be dropped from over 75 ft and not break!
