Learning Point

  • Mount Pinatubo was a tall mountain in the Philippines that was like a sleeping giant until it woke up in 1991 with a huge, noisy eruption, like a giant sneeze that sent ash high into the sky! This big eruption changed the land a lot, creating a lake at the top and covering everything in ash, even making the whole world a little cooler for a while. People live near Mount Pinatubo now and have learned to be careful, while scientists watch the mountain closely to make sure everyone stays safe.

Fun Facts

  • For a long time, people didn’t know Mount Pinatubo was an active volcano!
  • Its 1991 eruption was one of the biggest volcanic eruptions of the 20th century!
  • The ash cloud from the eruption went so high up into the sky, it even affected the weather around the world for a bit!
  • When rain mixed with the ash, it created thick, gooey mud rivers called “lahars” that flowed down the mountain.
