Learning Point
- Lanarkshire is one of the oldest counties in Scotland, existing from the time counties were created around the time of King David I. It has had different names, including Clydesdale, and is well known for its agricultural land, some of which has been used for farming and for orchards. It was a major part of the Industrial Revolution in Scotland, with mines, iron works and cotton mills.

Fun Facts
- The city of Glasgow was once part of Lanarkshire, but that is no longer the case now.
- Wilsontown Ironworks were the birthplace of the Scottish Industrial Revolution, and had all the materials they needed close by.
- David Dale, Richard Arkwright and Robert Owen were three important industrialists who were behind the mills at New Lanark.
- The county has a variety of landscapes, including hills in the south, as well as open dales and beautiful river valleys in the north.
