- Jelly Beans are thought to trace part of their origins back to Bible times as the centre uses a Turkish Delight style receipe. It was in the 1860s that they received their hard shell, becoming the traditional bean shape we know today. There are now many flavours, with the the whole bean containing the flavouring, not just the outer shell.

- William Schrafft seems to be the person who first sold jelly beans.
- In 1989 Jelly Belly (Goelitz) invented the first ‘savoury’ jelly bean – Buttered Popcorn flavour.
- By the 1990s the sour jelly bean had also been introduced.
- Wax, such as beeswax or other edible waxes, is used to help create the polished look.
