Learning Point
- The Diabloceratops was an early, medium-sized herbivore that lived 81 million years ago in North America (Utah). It belonged to the horned dinosaur family (ceratopsians). Its distinctive feature was a pair of long, curved spikes projecting backward from its neck frill. These horns and the frill were likely used for display and species recognition.

Fun Facts
- The name Mamenchisaurus means “Devil-horned face” in Spanish and Greek from the shape of its skull.
- Diabloceratops lived about 81 million years ago! This makes it one of the earliest known members of the group of large, famous horned dinosaurs like Triceratops.
- Scientists think these flashy horns and its frill were mainly used to show off to other Diabloceratops and help them recognize their own kind.
- Even though it’s a big name, Diabloceratops was medium-sized, growing to about 15 feet long—about the length of a small school bus—and it was a plant-eater (herbivore).
