Fun Facts

  • The castle was built on the site of a Welsh monastery, probably to help put in the minds of the local Welsh people that the English had control.
  • It withstood several sieges, and was held by men loyal to Charles I during the English Civil War in 1642.
  • It was abandoned during the 17th century, becoming a location many tourists and painters would come to admire.
  • It has the oldest stone machicolations in Britain, which are designed to allow the defenders to throw things on to attackers.
