- Conwy Castle has been described as one of the best examples of a 13th century castle in Europe. It sits in a picturesque location in the north of Wales, and was built by Edward I as part of his effort to control and hold on to the territory in Wales he had conquered. It includes a town wall, designed to help protect the town along with the castle.

- The castle was built on the site of a Welsh monastery, probably to help put in the minds of the local Welsh people that the English had control.
- It withstood several sieges, and was held by men loyal to Charles I during the English Civil War in 1642.
- It was abandoned during the 17th century, becoming a location many tourists and painters would come to admire.
- It has the oldest stone machicolations in Britain, which are designed to allow the defenders to throw things on to attackers.
