Building Castles

Type Construction of fortified houses and castles
Techniques Stonemasonry, carpentry, bricklaying
Tools Treadwheel Cranes, wheelbarrows, stonemason tools

Learning Point

  • Building a castle was a huge job! First, they needed a good location, like a hilltop, for defense. Then, workers dug a deep ditch called a moat and built strong walls around the castle. Inside, there were towers for lookouts, a big hall for feasts, and smaller rooms for living. Castles were made of stone, which was heavy, so they used pulleys and ropes to lift the blocks. Building a castle took many years and lots of skilled workers like stonemasons, carpenters, and blacksmiths.
