Censuses and Registrations

Definition “The process of officially counting something, especially a country’s population, and recording various facts.” – Oxford Dictionary

Learning Point

  • Census and Registrations are some of the most important documents to expand your search for your family. Depending on the year, or the country, they can contain information about relationships, jobs, homes, even illnesses. They were designed to help governments manage the needs of their people, but they have become valuable in researching family history.

Fun Facts

  • In Britain, censuses have been created every ten years since 1801, but we only have complete records from 1841.
  • Early censuses were complete lists of roads or villages, listing each person in each house.
  • Later censuses began to become focused on specific details within each household.
  • Enumerators were used to collect all the information in the 1800s, but that changed in during the 1900s as people began to write the information themselves.
