- The St. Lawrence River is a key river that runs through Canada and along the border of the United States. It has become an important route for commercial shipping. It marks the location of what was once a great inland sea, the Champlain Sea, which was drained when the land rose a little in the past.

Fun Facts
- As part of the St. Lawrence Seaway, the whole system covers 2,500 miles up to the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
- Glaciers occupied the the area from around 2,580,000 to 11,700 years ago, but they were replaced by the Champlain Sea, which flooded the land from about 13,000 to 9,500 years ago.
- For the last 6,000 years or so they river has been running through the same land in place of that lost sea.
- At times sections of the river can get covered in ice, requiring effort to keep the ports open during the winter months.
