  • The rice terraces are constructed by using a pool of water at the highest point to help level each terrace, so that the water sits correctly in the terrace to irrigate the rice or other food crops.
  • Water flows down each successive level of the terrace, ensuring each part is fully watered (irrigated).
  • The terraces then dry out as the rice consumes the water, making it possible to harvest it all.
  • The terraces require constant maintenance, but help prevent erosion and protects the mountain and valley environment.
