- The Caspian Sea is viewed as the largest inland sea or lake in the world. It contains a unique ecosystem, including many differnt types of animals and plants. It varies in size based on how much water is evaporating from it.

- The salinity (saltiness) of the Caspian Sea is only a third of what we find it most other seas and oceans.
- The sea makes up more than 40% of water held in landlocked (surrounded by land) seas and lakes.
- The northern part of the Caspian Sea is very shallow, just a few feet, whereas the southern is a lot deeper, over 3,000 feet in places.
- The Garabogazköl embayment dried up when water flow from the main body of the Caspian was blocked in the 1980s but has since been restored. It often has ten times the salinity (saltiness) of other oceans.
